Our top 5 digital strategy must-haves

‘Digital strategy’ can be an intimidating term that may make you feel like putting it in the 'do another day' pile. It is, after all, easy to get a bit lost in the vastness of information that’s out there.

So let us break down, bite-size style, 5 things we think a successful digital strategy should include.

1. It’s not you, it’s me - An honest review of where you are

Emphasis on the word honest. How do you stack up in the eyes of your prospects and customers? How do you compare with your competitors? Is digital enhancing your image and driving your business, or is it holding you back and letting your brand down? An appraisal will shed some light.

2. I wish, I wish - A vision of where you want to be

If the digital strategy fairy waved their magic wand and turned your business into a cutting-edge, perfect digital version of itself, what would it look like? If the fairy was a bit short on time, which bits would you get them to wave their wand at first to make the most difference? Set aside some time for a bit of productive daydreaming.

3. Are we there yet? - Know your targets

Every pound you spend on your website and every hour you spend on social media is money not spent elsewhere in your business. If you’re going to justify all that effort, you need to measure your success - or the lack of it. If something is not hitting its target, consider why. Tracking and testing should be your two best friends.

4 Is this thing on? – Who actually cares what you have to say?

We know, this might be hard to hear. You could be selling the world’s finest saucepans at prices a student could afford, but if you are talking to somebody who never cooks, even the smartest sales patter, advertising agencies campaign and marketing materials aren’t going to be much help. Likewise, if you’re shouting about your products on Twitter, but your best customers are all on LinkedIn, you’re not going to reach the right people. Understand who your audience is, and where you can find them.

5 Curb your enthusiasm – What will stand in your way?

The excitement of planning a bells and whistles digital strategy may dampen a little when cold, hard reality comes a-knocking. It could be a lack of budget, scepticism from other senior stakeholders, legacy software that’s painful to use, or something else that puts a spanner in the works. The best way to avoid disappointment? Identify those potential constraints early in the process!
